Carmel Prepares scheduled April 25; evacuation drill set for May 30

Carmel-by-the-Sea staff and volunteers are holding a Carmel Prepares emergency-preparedness session on Saturday, April 25, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at Carpenter Hall, the city announced. Wanda Volmer, the city’s CERT captain, said the session will include wildfire survivors from Altadena, a presentation by Chief Justin Cooper on wildfire preparedness, and remarks from Chief Trayer and Councilmember Hans Booter.
Volmer said the program will be a “very powerful, meaningful conversation” that will include first-person accounts from survivors identified as Deb, John, and Alejandro. “When you meet Deb, John, and Alejandro, you just can’t help but be moved by their story,” Volmer said, urging residents to submit questions in advance via the city’s newsletter link so organizers can incorporate them into the presentation.
Organizers said there will be a light breakfast and raffle items, but emphasized the primary purpose is public information. The session also will allow residents to register for local emergency alerts through Alert Monterey and to sign up in person for the city’s evacuation drill. The city plans to hold the evacuation drill on the morning of Saturday, May 30; city staff said it will be short but informative to help residents understand the process.
