Inaugural Corona 5000 draws thousands to downtown; organizers eye repeat event

Corona’s inaugural 5000‑meter community run drew broad participation and topped staff expectations, recreation officials told the City Council on April 15.
Recreation coordinator Reguel Carr reported that the race started on time at 8:30 a.m., showed participation of 2,786 registered runners, and estimated an overall attendance of roughly 5,500 people in the historic Civic Center area during race hours. The event included more than 30 vendors and exhibitors, student athletes, and representation from eight or nine U.S. states plus Canada, Carr said. The race recognized local Corona finishers and awarded certificates to top local male and female finishers; the program also incorporated community partners including OC Marathon and public works for traffic coordination.
Why it matters: City officials said the event reinforced downtown activation goals and provided vendor opportunities for local businesses. Staff said they are already in talks to stage the race again next year and intend to share race data and images to support future planning.
