Board hears construction updates; administration recommends Bordeaux as CM-at-risk for LJ Bell replacement

District staff briefed the Richmond County Schools board on a range of construction and renovation projects and recommended a construction-manager-at-risk for the LJ Bell replacement school.
Facilities staff reported progress on multiple projects: work at the former ninth-grade academy to prepare for the LJ Bell move (new playgrounds, a security vestibule, flex spaces and classroom whiteboards), a partial roof replacement at Richmond Senior High and a completed running track due to host a meet. Rockingham Middle School’s auditorium remodel will begin once school is out and seats will be surplussed. Stakeholder meetings about the LJ Bell move were scheduled monthly through the summer.
After an RFQ and interviews, administration recommended Bordeaux Construction as the CM-at-risk for the new LJ Bell replacement school, citing the firm’s K–12 experience and use of 3D laser scanning technology to reduce construction unknowns. Board members asked whether the recommended firm prioritized local subcontractors; administration said the firm indicated it would use local subs where feasible.
The board also approved listing several surplus vehicles (2005 and 2006 Ford Taurus, 1995 Ford F-150, a Chevrolet activity bus and a bus engine) for sale on GovDeals. No contested contract award or binding funding commitment for the LJ Bell project was made at the meeting; the CM-at-risk recommendation was presented and seconded on the record.
