The Smithfield School Committee approved the district’s fiscal-year 2027 budget calendar and voted to authorize multiple fund-balance expenditures during the meeting.
Administrators presented a proposed budget calendar with an earlier standalone budget workshop slated for Jan. 22 and a target vote in early February so materials can be submitted by Feb. 27 to the town manager. The committee moved, seconded, and approved the calendar after discussion about timing and coordination with the finance review board.
The committee also approved a request to fund replacement wireless access points and three switches at Gallagher Middle School not to exceed $48,623.17; the district’s IT lead reported that FCC paperwork and vendor process were in place and that the existing access points would reach end-of-life during the school year. A motion to fund the work from the fund balance was made, seconded, and approved.
Separately, the committee approved an additional $5,000 from the fund balance to move forward with a digital sign at Smithfield High School after a second round of bids returned a more favorable price; the project had an earlier class donation and the additional $5,000 covered the gap between gift and bid.
Committee members also approved requested Fiscal Year 2026 budget line-item changes that were provided in their packets.
All funding motions were put to the committee and carried during the meeting.
