Covington council gives consensus to revamp human services grant process

Covington — The Covington City Council and the Human Services Commission signaled support April 14 for a plan to reshape how the commission distributes its roughly $150,000 annual human services budget, moving away from a time-consuming cycle of dozens of small grants toward fewer, larger awards and a smaller, faster-response fund for urgent or pilot projects.

Julie Johnston, the city’s human services manager, and Sarah Parker of the Human Services Commission presented the proposal as a way to reduce the heavy volunteer workload involved in grant review and to strengthen services that serve Covington residents directly. Johnston said the review grew out of the expansion of an in-house Community Care program and a desire to “maximize our dollars and support our in-house community care program” so it can be sustainable and grow.
