Public works staff updated the committee on recent street‑safety improvements and launched an operations briefing on Rec Collect, a new GPS‑enabled routing and tracking system for the city's collection fleet.
Staff showed before‑and‑after images of intersection and crosswalk work — including new striping, signage, and rectangular rapid flashing beacons — and said the improvements have received positive feedback from MUSC employees and others in the area.
On waste collection, staff described Rec Collect as a platform that provides live GPS tracking, route completion status, photo documentation and tonnage tracking for landfill trips. "It shows us where the garbage trucks are at all times ... it tracks our tonnages from the landfill so we have a more accurate total," the presenter said. Councilman Shealy asked whether the data are public; staff replied, "So it's not available to the public, but Citizen Service Desk has it so they're able to log in." The presenter said the system allows staff to review service history and photos to investigate missed pickups or other exceptions.
Committee members asked clarifying questions about access and oversight. Staff said the system will assist citizen service responses and internal monitoring but is not a public real‑time feed. The presentation closed with staff thanking crews and partners and moving to the next agenda items.
