The Concord-Carlisle Regional School Committee reviewed a memo from town planner Elizabeth Hughes about parking implications for a proposed dry-dive center addition to a regional campus building.
Lori summarized the planner’s finding that adding roughly 1,000 square feet would change the parking-space calculation under local zoning and that previously available side-lot spaces would be lost. Planners have proposed replacing those spaces with on-loop parking, but the change could require Zoning Board of Appeals hearings, permitting and possibly a variance. "It isn't about whether the BD lot is full; it's about compliance with the required number of spaces," Lori said, reading the planner’s guidance.
Committee members voiced practical and safety concerns at drop-off and pick-up, noting heavy vehicle, bus and student-driver traffic at the Waldman Street entrance. Members discussed options including a small gravel lot, timed no-parking signage during peak traffic, or tolerating the BD lot pattern while pursuing site-specific permitting. Members emphasized the committee’s support for the project but said they wanted more detailed designs, a parking study and a planner/architect presentation at a future meeting.
No vote was taken; the planner or project team will be asked to return with more documentation for a May meeting.
