A Rural Retreat High School junior, Olivia Crigger, asked the Wythe County Board of Supervisors to support placement of farm machinery crossing reminder signs on high-risk roads after a local roadway tragedy inspired her Girl Scout Gold Award project.
Crigger told the board she identified routes including Peppers Ferry Road, Black Lick Road and Old Stage Road as locations where signage could increase awareness and reduce collisions involving farm equipment. She described the effort as rooted in community safety and long-term prevention. Supervisor Jesse R. Burnett and others praised her initiative and Chair James D. “Jamie” Smith thanked her for her dedication.
VDOT Resident Engineer Mr. Schwartz told the board that he had received Ms. Crigger’s formal sign requests and forwarded them to the traffic engineering division for review and recommendation; he said he would keep Ms. Crigger and the board informed of progress. Chair Smith and multiple supervisors offered the board’s support for the effort.
The board did not take a formal vote on signage at the meeting; the next steps are VDOT traffic-engineering review and follow-up reporting to the county and the student.
