Town approves Rocking on Main event and waives permit fees for May 22

Jason Dile, president of the Speedway Town Council, presided as the council unanimously approved a special-event permit for Rocking on Main, scheduled for Friday, May 22, the town’s Carb Day observance.

Cheryl Maroy, the town communications lead and event organizer, told the council the event would run roughly 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., with the stage sited just south of 16th Street. "The schedule date is Carb Day as always — May 22nd this year," Maroy said, and she asked that Main Street from 13th to 16th be closed beginning at 1:00 p.m. (an earlier 8:00 a.m. closure was requested for the area immediately adjacent to the larger stage to allow setup). She also said organizers will add a "rock, rest, and repeat" outdoor lounge area, a kids zone (planned for 5–8 p.m.), and vendor/artisan booths. Maroy said sponsorships to date total about $30,000 and that bands booked include Big Rosco and the Hammers and the Flying Toasters.

Maroy explained outreach plans to notify residents and businesses, including social media, emails, signage, and flyers for downtown merchants, and said the event team will use staged vendor arrival points to reduce traffic backups during street clearances.

Councilmember Nick Sturgeon complimented Maroy’s planning materials and thanked her for a detailed run-of-show. After brief discussion, the council voted to approve the special-event request, including a waiver of permit fees, by a 5-0 voice vote.

The permit approval authorizes the stated street closures and the amplified stage on Main Street for the May 22 event. Organizers told the council they will continue coordination with police and public works on street signage and towing procedures for vehicles left in the closure area.

Next steps: organizers will finalize operational details with town staff and publish public notices of the closures and parking restrictions prior to the event.
