Assembly recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month and swears in Bayside fire officers

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly used part of its April 16 meeting for community recognition: a Bayside Fire Department swearing-in ceremony, Citizens Academy certificates, and a proclamation recognizing April 2026 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Chief Ellis described the department’s promotion and selection process and the Assembly clerk administered oaths for the newly sworn officers. Family members participated in the traditional pinning ceremony. Assemblymembers and the mayor thanked volunteers and praised the department’s training and succession planning.
Mayor Jared Griffin read a proclamation declaring Sexual Assault Awareness Month and invited Elmie Teeler, Outreach Coordinator for the Kodiak Women's Resource and Crisis Center, to speak. Teeler said Kodiak remains a caring community but that sexual assault remains a significant problem locally; she told the Assembly that in 2025 KWRCC worked with 38 victims in Kodiak and urged residents to support survivors and talk about consent and healthy relationships.
Citizens Academy graduates received certificates; attendees were told that presentations from the academy will be posted to the borough website. Assemblymembers encouraged residents to participate in the Citizens Academy to better understand local government processes.
