Assembly and school district redirect $621,844 toward East Elementary roof project

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly on April 16 approved a memorandum of agreement (contract number FY2026-54) with the Kodiak Island Borough School District to redirect leftover funds from earlier school roof projects to the East Elementary School roof replacement.
Manager Williams summarized the funding history: after the Main Elementary roof replacement there remained $813,262.61; some amounts were spent on design and patching work, leaving $621,844.01 available. "There is $621,844.01 remaining to be redirected for the use at East Elementary for both design and the roof replacement project," she said. The East project is about 65% through design and town planners expect construction in summer 2027.
Assemblymember Ames expressed reservations about directing significant funds into a school that could be affected by future consolidation decisions, saying he "hate[s] the idea of us dumping a much bunch of money into a school that might possibly close." Manager Williams responded that district models discussed during budget talks indicated East is likely to be the primary school remaining under consolidation scenarios, making the investment appropriate for long-term uses.
Mr. Whiteside moved and the Assembly unanimously approved the agreement. The redirected funds will be reserved and used for East Elementary design and construction as spelled out in the MOA between the borough and the school district.
