Assembly approves $41,704 change order to extend seawater pump shafts at KFRC

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly voted April 16 to authorize change order number two for contract FY2025-49, addressing a mismatch discovered during pump replacement at the Kodiak Fisheries Research Center (KFRC).
Borough Manager Amy Williams told the Assembly that during installation the new pump assemblies were found to be about 10 feet shorter than the pumps they were replacing. She said the contractor will add required extensions and "the contractor will install the required extensions at no additional cost to the borough," and that the change order covers the borough’s direct material costs. Manager Williams reported the change order cost as $41,704.05.
Assemblymember Gardner asked whether the previously purchased pumps could be repurposed; Manager Williams said the pumps themselves are in working order and the borough will retain a spare once the shaft-length extensions are installed. Assemblymember Ames noted the project’s history and as-built documentation issues, saying older drawings had not captured changes made over time.
Mr. Whiteside moved the authorization; the roll-call vote recorded unanimous approval by members present. The borough said the work addresses operational disruptions at KFRC and will prevent future downtime for tenants of the building.
Implementation: the contractor (Industrial Pumps of Alaska per packet) will supply materials and install shaft extensions under the approved change order; the borough reported no markup on the direct costs.
