Board approves $560,000 from affordable housing trust for Milport repairs

The New Canaan Board of Selectmen on March 17 approved a $560,000 transfer from the town's affordable housing trust to fund capital repairs at the Milport affordable housing properties.
Scott, representing the housing authority, told the board the request covers three items: about $275,000 to repave aging parking lots, $110,000 to install new security cameras and monitoring, and $175,000 for HVAC equipment. "We put in a quest for affordable housing funds for Millport ... we need to repave," Scott said.
Scott said the trust is funded by an affordable-housing fee tied to building permits and currently holds roughly $720,000. He said the authority is asking for $560,000 because much of the fund was recently allocated to Riverwood and other projects.
Board members asked about competitive bidding and ongoing reserves. Scott said the figures are estimates and the projects will be competitively bid: "these are estimates and we're getting into the ... we'll bid it out competitively and make sure ... a fair deal." He also said the housing projects generally maintain some reserves but large capital work can exhaust those reserves.
The motion to approve the request from the housing authority for $560,000 from the affordable housing trust fund for capital improvement projects at the Milport properties passed unanimously.
Next steps: staff will finalize bid documents and return with specific contracts and vendor selections as the procurement process proceeds.
