Council says grant cycle nearly complete; spring festivals and hotel venues shifting as visitor traffic rises

Council staff told the Nantucket Cultural Council that the last grant contracts submitted by recipients are scheduled for a Select Board vote on Wednesday, April 15, and that the council expects grant dispersal to follow after reports from program recipients.
"The last contracts that were submitted to me by the recipients will be voted on this Wednesday at the Select Board meeting on April 15," the chair said, adding the council expects dispersal and reporting to follow once the Select Board acts.
Members also discussed spring event scheduling. Speakers said the Fagawi weekend will fall on the Memorial Day weekend this year and that Winefest has been moved to the following weekend; some local businesses have adjusted schedules in response. Several speakers noted changes to Winefest venues, mentioning Bartletts and the Dreamland, and that the festival footprint will include the Nantucket Hotel and Nantucket Inn.
On tourism traffic, a staff member reported a recent increase in visitors to the town office: "This past week, we saw an uptick in the amount of people coming into the office day to day — up to like 25 to 30," the staff member said, compared with earlier counts of three to five per day.
Separately, a council member raised a traffic-safety concern about a stop sign near Surfside where they described near-miss collisions and urged caution.
The council closed routine business and adjourned; members will reconvene next month to continue planning the season.
