Commission staff on April 14 reviewed the Beautification Commission’s 2025 work plan and outlined priorities for 2026, telling commissioners which items are complete, partially complete or still pending.
Tyler read a memo summarizing last year’s objectives: the parks and garden tour was completed, the winter tour was not, the Leif Hanson Memorial Fountain improvements were completed during the tour, and citywide murals remain partially completed because a final mural design has not been selected. "Progress is made through discussion, the objective remains partially completed," Tyler said about the murals.
Members asked whether static displays and light-pole decorations had been put into the city’s capital improvement plan. Tyler confirmed the light-pole decorations were incorporated into the CIP and will be presented to council for budget approval next month. "It's on the capital improvement plan. It does still have to get approved in the budget," Tyler said.
Commissioners discussed design ideas: park-specific planting themes (for example, different looks for Leif Hanson and Scout Park), focusing planter colors for stronger visual impact, and limiting holiday lighting to two or three colors per park to create a cleaner display. One commissioner proposed scheduling a greenhouse tour before the May meeting to see plant staging and to help shape 2026 goals.
No formal vote was taken; Tyler asked that a member of the commission volunteer to draft the formal report to forward to council, as was done previously by a chair. The commission plans to revisit the draft 2026 work plan at the next regular meeting.
