Committee backs city application for $5,000 microgrant to buy bike racks

The committee voted April 16 to move forward with a resolution authorizing the city to apply for a $5,000 transportation microgrant intended to buy bicycle racks for locations across New Haven.
Haley Simpson, director of Transportation, Traffic & Parking, said one microgrant could purchase approximately 27 racks to serve residents, students, employees and visitors who travel by micromobility devices. "We are proposing with this microgrant is to purchase 27 bicycle racks," Simpson said. The application deadline staff noted is June 25, 2026, and staff will identify specific rack locations after receiving authorization to apply.
Committee members welcomed the modest, low-cost grant as a useful addition to the city’s micromobility infrastructure. The committee voted to move the item to the board for approval.
