Alders’ committee advances $2.85M DOT-funded Ferry Street safety project

The City Services & Environmental Policy committee voted April 16 to advance a resolution authorizing the mayor to accept Connecticut Department of Transportation funding for safety improvements on Ferry Street.
City staff described the scope as standard corridor upgrades — widened sidewalks, raised intersections and curb bump-outs — intended to bring the corridor into compliance with federal accessibility guidance. "We have to update the sidewalks to the public rights-of-way accessibility guidance ... PROWAG," staff said, noting sections south of Grand Avenue are currently too narrow and some trees may need removal to meet clear width standards.
Staff told alders the funding level for construction is about $2.85 million and does not require a local construction match; the city funds design work. Staff cautioned that state approvals and permits remain a key caveat to schedule and that final design details will be informed by ongoing public meetings.
The committee moved the item and voted to forward it to the full board. Next steps include final design, state permitting and scheduling of construction once approvals and agreements are in place.
