Franklin Township honors local schools and volunteers for sustainability; green fair set for April

The Franklin Township Council and Environmental Commission presented environmental stewardship awards during their Nov. 25 meeting, singling out Pinerove Elementary School for leading the district in Sustainable Jersey for Schools points.
Pinerove earned 405 points through measures including an Energy Star profile to track efficiency, a community garden, promotion of locally grown food in student programming and an ongoing partnership with the Franklin Food Bank. Assistant Superintendent Dan Logan and Principal Edgar Vasquez Molina accepted the recognition and credited former staff and the school’s green team for the work.
Franklin High School (355 points) and Franklin Middle School (350 points) received honorable mentions and silver-level recognition under the Sustainable Jersey program. The Environmental Commission announced the township’s fourth annual green fair is scheduled for April 25 (electric car show, plant vendors, a petting zoo and student activities). Officials asked residents to consult the township website for event details and volunteer opportunities.
Council members praised the schools’ student engagement and described the awards as models for district‑wide sustainability. No policy changes or funding votes were taken at this meeting; councilors said they will continue to highlight sustainability practices during budget and education planning meetings.
