Douglas County proclaims Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and National Fair Housing Month; state resolution presented

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners on April 14 adopted two unanimous proclamations honoring public safety telecommunicators and recognizing April as National Fair Housing Month.

Katrina Harley, Douglas County E911 Director, and Deputy Director Amanda Strickland read a proclamation praising 911 operators and dispatchers for their role in emergency response; the board voted to adopt the proclamation by a 5-0 vote.

Amy McCoy and Valerie Rivera of the West Georgia Board of Realtors presented a Fair Housing Month proclamation about the history of housing discrimination, protections under the Fair Housing Act and an exhibit open through April 25 at the Youth Innovation Lab on Gurley Road. Senator Danzella James attended and presented a corresponding state senate resolution recognizing April as Fair Housing Month in Douglas County; during his remarks he said the state senate passed Senate Bill 406.

The board voted 5-0 to adopt the local proclamation. Officials encouraged school visits to the exhibit and public hours of 2–6 p.m. daily, with school tours scheduled 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

Why it matters: Proclamations formalize county recognition of public-safety personnel and local efforts to promote fair housing education and awareness. The state resolution adds legislative recognition of the exhibit and related outreach.

Next steps: County staff and organizers planned photo opportunities following the proclamations and encouraged residents and schools to visit the exhibit through April 25.
