Board hears Miller Middle School construction update; schedule and financing steps set

Staff told the board they plan to return March 2 with contractor recommendations and aim for site mobilization in late March followed by phased demolition and construction in April.
Mitch, a district project manager, described several bid alternates that could be added depending on bid results, including a renovated concessions area, restroom renovations, south courtyard hardscaping and an expanded parking‑lot build‑out. “Some of those will have termination points that we can’t at a certain point, but the goal would be that on bid day we have a good enough bid day that we can start to pull some of those items in,” he said.
Tim, the design consultant, said the construction scope includes historical restoration of the auditorium, a new secured vestibule and a multi‑purpose commons with AV capabilities. The team reported generally strong contractor interest: a pre‑bid outreach event drew more than 40 contractors and additional firms indicated early interest.
Budget and schedule: project documents and the team’s cost packet indicate the program remains within the budgeted range originally allotted for Miller (staff described it as trending within the previously allocated near‑$99 million allowance, subject to alternates and market conditions). The team also said there are about 28 individual bid packages planned for the work.
Board actions and next steps: the board approved two Franklin Field change orders funded from project contingencies, and approved a resolution ordering construction for the remaining Miller bid packages and set a public hearing for Feb. 16, 2026 at 5 p.m. Finance staff explained statutory sequencing for bid approvals and public notice. The project team will circulate bid documents, host the pre‑bid site walks and return to the board with recommended contractors after bids are opened.
Why it matters: Miller is a major capital project for the district; timely procurements and competitive bids determine whether alternates and historical restoration elements can be retained without additional tax or bond increases.
