Clare County approves support for GFL transfer station concept and passes resolution opposing state takeover of local zoning

Rick, representing GFL, described plans for an enclosed transfer station in Hayes Township to provide centralized recycling and waste-transfer capacity. He said the project would be privately financed by GFL, create an estimated 5–10 jobs, and allow residents to drop off recyclables. "Everything inside will be enclosed and cleaned daily," Rick said, answering commissioners’ questions about odor and community impact.
After GFL’s presentation, Justin — who had circulated a letter urging local zoning authority be retained — asked the board to adopt a resolution opposing bills that would shift zoning control to the state. Commissioners discussed the language and whether members had time to read the pending bills; some said a quick vote would help influence state action before votes occur, while others requested more time to review text before formally opposing legislation.
Despite those requests, the board moved and adopted Resolution 2609, which states the board’s opposition to measures that would transfer zoning authority from local governments to the state and asks that state legislators preserve local control. The motion carried on roll-call vote. The board also indicated support in principle for a GFL letter of support for the transfer station pending final site and regulatory details.
The resolution and the letter of support will be sent to the county’s state representative and other appropriate state officials. Commissioners said they want to ensure any future site approvals for the GFL project respect airport runway-setback rules, community aesthetics and regulatory review requirements.
