City staff told the DDA that the city has secured an Oakland County grant to test a temporary lane conversion on North Main Street between 14 Mile and Elmwood that would reduce travel lanes, add a center turn lane and create additional on‑street parking.
Staff said the pilot would use temporary barricades and striping to simulate a lane conversion similar to what exists on South Main and would run about 30 days during the school year so the city can measure parking utilization and whether traffic is calmer for students walking to the nearby K–12 campus. Initial estimates provided to the board anticipated roughly 60 additional on‑street spaces between 14 Mile and the library, depending on final configuration.
The project has cost estimates from multiple providers, and staff said the pilot is intended to gather data—including heat‑map traffic analysis—from May and June deployments rather than testing only in summer months when traffic patterns differ. Staff noted the pilot would not commit the city to a permanent change; it is a demonstration to inform future planning.
The board was told the pilot is tentatively scheduled to be presented to city council at its next meeting; staff expects to return with a recommended implementation window, public engagement plan and follow‑up reporting on safety and parking metrics after the trial.
Other development updates presented to the board included demolition status at 150 North Main (former PNC), ongoing work at 172 West 14 Mile (former Burger King) and a pending mixed‑use pre‑application for 20 West 14 Mile (former Pizza Hut) with a planning commission timeline in June.
