Eagle Scout project approved to add two wheelchair-accessible benches at Pioneer Park

Vivian Slimer, an Eagle Scout candidate with a local troop, told the Harlan City Council on June 17 that she plans to install two wheelchair‑accessible benches at Pioneer Park — one near the Pine Street shelter and one by the pond — to improve accessibility for park users.

"I went on a two‑week vacation and we had to push my grandma around in a wheelchair constantly. There's nowhere for her to put her stuff down," Slimer said, describing the project’s origin. She said local volunteers will pour concrete and help install the units, and that fundraising has covered most costs except for the two benches themselves. Slimer estimated the benches cost about $209 each, for roughly $400 total.

Council members asked about funding and logistics; one council member offered to purchase one bench personally pending final details. A motion to approve the Eagle Scout project was moved by Peterson, seconded by Shaven, and approved by roll call.

The candidate said she must install the benches before receiving her Eagle award and expected to complete the project and remaining merit requirements before starting high school in August. City staff will provide contact information and the required approvals to allow the candidate to proceed once fundraising and procurement are finalized.

The action was approved unanimously on the roll call vote.
