Board approves $727,000 in e-rate Category 1 and 2 awards for network upgrades

"We're asking the board in the recommendations later on to approve $727,000 worth of e-rate money between LOA and Greene County School System," Mr. Elmer said, and he explained specific technical drivers: several switches and firewalls are at end of life, the high school's wiring is more than 20 years old, and the plan reduces network drops from roughly 2,000 to about 600 by emphasizing ceiling-mounted jacks and updated topology.
Mr. Elmer said timing matters because manufacturers that bid the work had already announced price increases (one vendor announced about a 25% increase), and additional increases are projected later in the year. He noted an operational saving opportunity: by coordinating network wiring with planned summer HVAC/roof work to open hall ceilings, the district expects an estimated 30% savings on the wiring project portion.
Board members asked whether newly purchased switches would be supported and current. Mr. Elmer said the district purchases current equipment intended to receive five to seven years of vendor support.
The board moved and seconded motions to approve the Category 1 vendor recommendations and the Category 2 projects (including the One Accord-managed services/installation recommendation).
