Clinton honors firefighters for lifesaving response; council issues Arbor Day and Autism proclamations

The Clinton City Council on April 14 honored Clinton Fire Department personnel for a December 3 emergency response that staff said resulted in a patient’s successful outcome. Chief McQuistion introduced Assistant Chief Joe Bunnell and paramedics Chandler Sterk, Matt Cain and Wes Hahn and credited dispatch and supporting crew members for rapid coordination and lifesaving care.
The recognition cited teamwork during an incident in which the patient became pulseless and unresponsive at first contact; paramedics initiated advanced life support measures on scene and during transport to Mercy One, and staff said ongoing communication with dispatch helped responders locate the patient when the call’s location changed. Chief McQuistion called the actions “professional” and invited the council to congratulate the crew.
The council also accepted two proclamations. Dick Witt, chair of the Tree Commission, read an Arbor Day proclamation noting Clinton has been a Tree City USA recipient for more than 33 years and announced a community tree planting Friday, April 25, 2025, along Springdale Drive between 13th and 19th Avenue NW with local schools and Trees Forever. The proclamation urged citizens to plant and care for trees to benefit property values, air quality and the community.
Councilmember Turpin presented a proclamation declaring April 2026 Autism Awareness Month in Clinton, saying that early diagnosis and access to services can improve quality of life and urging residents to support inclusion and awareness efforts.
No council action beyond adoption of the proclamations was necessary; the recognitions and proclamations were presented during the meeting’s opening ceremonial items.
