Estill County Middle School students and coaches introduce Odyssey of the Mind club to the board

A group of students and coaches presented the new Odyssey of the Mind (OM) club to the Estill County Board of Education during the April 16 meeting, explaining how the program blends performing arts and STEM and offers regional, state and world-level competitions.
Presenters described five problem types students may choose — vehicle, technical, classics, structure and performance — and explained that each problem includes both a performance component and a device or artifact the team must design. Coaches highlighted skills students gain in teamwork, time management, budgeting and public speaking, and noted scholarships and other opportunities are available to high-school competitors.
Presenters said Odyssey can be free for students depending on available funding, though some teams may ask students to pay a small fee to cover supplies. The club will be open to middle- and high-school students; several students who attended a shadow program were recognized by coaches and invited to share their experience with the board.
Coaches and a new OM coach encouraged board and community support as the district adds the program to the middle and high school offerings. The board applauded the students’ presentation and invited them to leave if they wished before the board continued with other business.
