Danville school board approves calendar change, multiple consent motions and recognizes staff and students

At its March 19 meeting the board approved several routine motions (agenda amendment, minutes, proclamations, personnel and finance reports), moved the 2026-27 school start date to Aug. 5 to avoid a primary election, and recognized educators, adult-education milestone graduates (102 stated), and student achievers including wrestler Donovan Reeves.
The Danville Public Schools Board of Education convened March 19 and moved through routine business with unanimous roll-call votes on multiple items, while spending much of the evening recognizing district achievements.
Early in the meeting trustees voted to amend the agenda to add item 9.2 (the superintendent evaluation calendar); that motion was made by Dr. Williams and seconded by Miss Avery and passed unanimously. The board approved minutes from its March 6 meeting, and on consent approved proclamations for School Library Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Multiple recognition items occupied the meeting: Ken Nicely of Ronok County Public Schools and Mr. Steven Mayhew presented a Region Six Superintendent of the Year recognition for Danville Superintendent Dr. Angela Haristen. The board also honored a milestone in adult education; Dr. Antonio Harrison, identified as the district's coordinator for adult education and credit recovery, reported the adult-education program had graduated 102 students since 2021 and thanked staff and partner organizations. Donovan Reeves was recognized for wrestling accomplishments and the board read a proclamation declaring March 2026 Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and announced a Special Olympics event April 13 at George Washington High School.
On action items the board approved an academic-calendar revision to avoid starting school on the same day as a state primary that had been moved to Aug. 4: the change moves the first day of school to Aug. 5 and converts Oct. 12 to a full instructional day to preserve the 180-day year. Dr. Williams moved the calendar motion, Miss Cunningham seconded it, and the clerk recorded a unanimous vote.
Other items approved by roll-call included personnel recommendations and the monthly finance report (revenue and expenditure statements for the period ended Feb. 28, 2026). The superintendent announced next budget steps (public hearing April 2; board approval April 16). Trustees closed with requests for a capital-projects update and remarks celebrating students and staff.
