The Berkeley County Board of Education on March 16 approved personnel recommendations from the administration, authorized a settlement in a pending legal case and granted a student’s expulsion appeal after an executive session.
Board member Mr. McQuillin moved to “accept the personnel recommendations of the administration as discussed in executive session for the current school year.” The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote, the chair said.
The board also voted to approve a proposed settlement demand in the case of Berkeley County School District versus Compass Municipal Advisors and to “authorize Superintendent Dixon to execute all documents and agreements to effectuate such settlement,” a motion recorded in the minutes said. The case was identified in the executive-session notice as case number 209 CP08000548.
Separately, the board considered a student expulsion appeal. Miss Littleton moved that the board “grant the appeal for the student to return to their home-assigned school on strict probation as discussed in executive session.” The motion was seconded by Miss Bradley and approved by voice vote.
The chair stated for the record that no action had been taken while the board was in executive session but then called for the recorded votes on items that required board action. The motions approving personnel recommendations, authorizing the settlement, and granting the student’s appeal were all announced as carried without roll-call tallies in the public record.
The board did not specify individual personnel actions or the settlement amount during the public session; those details were discussed in executive session and are not contained in the public minutes. The board did identify the legal case by case number in the executive-session notice and said the settlement authorization empowers the superintendent to sign whatever agreements are necessary to effectuate the settlement.
The board moved on to committee business after approving the executive-session items and adjourned at the end of the regular meeting.
