Students honored as Future Problem Solvers winners; board approves international trip

Two students from Northumberland County schools described their award-winning creative writing entries and the board unanimously approved their request to attend the international Future Problem Solvers competition.
Dr. Leslie invited members of the Future Problem Solving program to present highlights from the NMS and NHS creative writing divisions. Jonathan Falls, a seventh grader, placed third in the middle division. "Jonathan Falls is a seventh grader and Jonathan placed third in the middle division," the presenter said. Jordan Bun, a 10th grader, described his dystopian story and explained the writing process: "I have been in the FPS program for the past 5 years. I wanted to share with you the process involved with writing some of my stories." Jordan placed first in the senior division and, as the winner, was invited to the international competition at Indiana University (June 10–14).
Michelle Jennings was recognized by presenters for her ongoing support of the student writers. The program requested permission for the first-place student and a chaperone to attend the international competition. Board members were told no additional funding was needed because the trip is budgeted within the program's TAG budget. The motion to approve the travel request was made, seconded and carried 5-0.
Board members offered congratulations: "Thank you, Miss Jennings. Good luck, gentlemen. Do us proud," one member said.
What happens next: The students and chaperone will proceed to organize travel under the existing program budget; the district will record the board's permission in the minutes.
