The Committee of Community Planning and Economic Development on April 14 reviewed an ordinance authorizing the Board of Control to enter an economic development agreement for 3827 Market Street.
Chair Julius Oliver said the project remains substantially the same and that the council was being asked to move the item forward to the legislative packet. Staff explained the project design selected underground water detention rather than an above-ground detention option, and clarified the previously discussed digital sign is a separate item that is not included in this ordinance.
Staff told the committee the city’s Economic Development Fund is the expected funding source. A staff member referenced a prior, verbal commitment of approximately $100,000 but said there was no formal allocation in writing on the city’s records. Mayor Derek McDonald and other members emphasized the need to treat each development request individually to avoid creating a precedent for inconsistent awards of public funds.
No formal vote was recorded in committee during the discussion; the chair noted the measure is already in the legislative packet and that no committee action was required at the meeting.
The committee left the item on file for the usual legislative process; staff said any further changes or formal funding requests would be returned to council for authorization.
