Several Yuba City residents used the public comment period April 7 to urge the council to help replace an off-leash dog park that speakers said is closing.
Pam Mashado told the council she uses the park regularly and asked the city to consider sponsoring a new dog park or sectioning off part of an existing city-maintained park to reduce costs. “A dog park is not only good for the dogs to enjoy, but also for the people of the city,” Mashado said, arguing such an amenity helps attract homebuyers, tourists and businesses.
Elizabeth Robinson, who said she attended a meeting on the issue last year, reported the dog-park board had been informed the park would have to be sold and asked how neighboring Live Oak created a smaller dog park and maintained it. She told the council she was not familiar with the city’s finances and that the city previously indicated limited funds to help maintain the facility.
City staff declined to answer detailed operational or funding questions during public comment but told residents the city is engaged in exploring public and private options for a replacement and has not reached a decision.
There was no council action on the issue at the meeting. Staff and residents were advised to continue discussions with the city manager’s office; no timeline or funding commitment was announced.
