Peoria County Board issues proclamations honoring schools, nonprofits and public service

The Peoria County Board used the first portion of its April 9 meeting to present a string of proclamations recognizing local schools, nonprofits and public‑service milestones.
Camille Coates read a proclamation honoring Manual High School’s boys basketball team for winning the 2025–26 IHSA Class 2A championship — the program’s first state title since 1997 — and noted the team finished the season 25–9. Coach Marvin Johnson thanked the board and praised the players’ “heart” and “togetherness.”
The board also recognized the Junior League of Peoria on its 90th anniversary, noting the organization’s role in projects such as the Peoria Playhouse Children’s Museum and literacy and youth programs. Betty Duncan read a proclamation declaring April 6–12 National Public Health Week in Peoria County and cited local public‑health challenges including food insecurity and mental‑health disparities; Monica Hendrickson, speaking for the health department, thanked the board for the recognition.
Other proclamations honored the Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology at Bradley University on its 75th anniversary, Earth Day (April 22), the Children’s Home Association of Central Illinois on its 160th anniversary, Home Visitor Appreciation Day (April 30), National Correctional Officers Week (May 3–9), National Police Week (May 10–17) and County Government Month (April). The board also presented a proclamation to Issa Zaid for winning the Central Illinois regional Scripps Spelling Bee; Issa Zaid told the board he appreciated the support of his family, school and the Peoria Public Library.
The proclamations were ceremonial recognitions rather than votes on policy or budget matters. The meeting continued after the proclamations to the consent agenda and other formal business.
The board adjourned after committee updates and reminders about upcoming events and filings.
