Urbana asks residents to complete housing needs survey by April 30 as study moves toward July report

City staff told the Urbana Arts and Culture Commission on April 14 that the city is conducting a housing needs study and asked commissioners and residents to complete an online survey by April 30 to inform the analysis.
Staff said the survey contains about 27 multiple-choice questions and takes roughly 10 minutes to complete. The study was born out of the city’s comprehensive plan adopted in July 2025; staff said the housing needs study will supplement census data with local qualitative information about student status, homeownership and residents’ housing preferences.
The staff member said the study’s findings will be used to identify market gaps and to help shape policy and development decisions over the near and longer term. Staff told the commission the study report is expected in July and encouraged commissioners and the public to share the survey on social media and through other outreach channels; a public computer is available at the Community Services Department vestibule for those without home internet access.
No formal action was taken on the housing study at the meeting; staff requested assistance spreading the survey and said they would return with the report after analysis is complete.
