The Community Activities Commission on April 14 approved a permit for "Carmel by the Glass," a one-day wine-tasting organizers plan to hold on Carmel Beach on Sept. 19, 2026.
Organizer Jack Galante (Galante Family Vineyards) told commissioners the event will be an intentionally intimate, curated tasting showcasing about 15 local tasting rooms. The proposed hours are 2–5 p.m., with online-only ticket sales and a target cap of roughly 300–350 attendees. All guests would be 21 and older, subject to ID checks and wristbands; no wine sales will be permitted on the beach, and no open bottles will be sold there. Galante said prepackaged snack boxes will be provided by licensed restaurants, and that volunteers (including nonprofit beneficiary Set Free Monterey Bay) will staff the event.
Event logistics discussed with staff included load-in/load-out, two designated parking/loading spaces on Scenic for vendor access, and portable-restroom requirements (the city requires additional facilities for events that exceed 200 attendees). Visit Carmel indicated support for marketing coordination; the organizer said Visit Carmel and local wineries will assist with promotion.
Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the permit with conditions customary for beach events: coordination with city staff on loading locations, waste removal and sanitary facilities, adherence to ABC rules on alcohol service, and the organizer’s responsibility to restore the beach and remove waste after the event.
The organizer will finalize logistics with city staff, including any additional loading spaces, final transport arrangements, and a plan for recycling and composting of service materials. Set Free Monterey Bay will be the named beneficiary for the event.
The commission noted the permit does not require council review and the event may proceed once the organizer meets the permit conditions and coordinates final logistics with city staff.
