Dr. Theren Shudy, superintendent, reviewed the recommended calendar, telling the board that “the first day is the first legal day that we can have school. Monday, August 24th,” and noting the schedule includes a two‑week winter break and 12 professional development days for staff. Board members said the calendar aligns with staff survey results: roughly 60% of about 490 respondents preferred a two‑week winter break rather than ending the year several days earlier.
The vote closed a required public‑hearing step under Iowa Code section 279.10; the board moved and seconded the item and approved the calendar by voice vote, 5–0. The approval follows the district’s normal calendar review cycle and will allow staff to proceed with classroom scheduling and communications to families.
The board’s action is procedural: the calendar sets the district’s official school year dates and staff work days but does not change other district policies. The administration said it will continue to monitor staff and community feedback on scheduling and report back if adjustments are needed.
