City staff announced on Jan. 27 that East Grand Forks received a $250,000 award from a state Mighty Ducks grant program to replace an R22 refrigeration system at the VFW Memorial Arena.
"We applied for $500,000," said Mr. King, a city staff member. "We just recently received an award letter that said ... they are going to award us $250,000." He said the statewide program had roughly $1 million available and that it was divided among four communities that received $250,000 each. Mr. King said the grant dollars "will go directly to the project at the BFW Arena to help offset any additional local costs." (Transcript spelling of the arena name varied; city records refer to the VFW Memorial Arena.)
Mr. King described the award as "exciting news" and said the funds will help offset local costs of phasing out R22 refrigerants as required by the grant program. The announcement was presented as information; the council did not record a formal vote on accepting the grant during the work session.
The meeting concluded shortly after the announcement and a motion to adjourn was made and recorded as passing.
