The University Heights City Council voted April 14 to renew the Class C liquor license for Sidekick Coffee & Books. The renewal was approved after local compliance checks and standard background and building/health inspections.
Clerk Mike Havocamp explained the state recently recoded licensing records by ZIP code during an administrative restructuring, which temporarily placed University Heights under Iowa City’s classification and would have increased license fees. Staff contacted state officials and local lawmakers to clarify the intent and preserve the longstanding local approval process. "We've managed to get that straightened out," the clerk said; the council proceeded with the local renewal.
The council approved the renewal by unanimous consent.
