The West Valley City Council on April 14 read a proclamation recognizing April 2026 as Child Abuse Prevention Month and called on citizens to increase awareness and support for families.
Council Member Wood read the proclamation, which emphasized the importance of community attention to child safety and noted that hundreds of cases occurred in West Valley City in the prior year. After the proclamation reading, a Family Support Center representative came forward to accept the document.
During the public comment period Lori Cox, who identified herself with the Family Support Center, thanked the council for the proclamation and said her organization operates a crisis nursery in West Valley City. Cox said she will be pursuing municipal partnerships "with money, with action, and with things like proclamations" and urged cities to work with organizations such as Family Support Center and Prevent Child Abuse Utah to reduce child‑abuse rates.
The proclamation and Cox’s remarks were framed as calls for greater cooperation across cities and service providers; no formal council action beyond the proclamation was taken at the meeting.
The council also heard complementary remarks from Craig Thomas recognizing neighborhood leadership academy graduates (covered separately).
