Carroll Consolidated School Corp. staff presented a slate of summer capital projects on April 14 and answered board questions about costs, timing and alternatives for a series of facilities items.
Facilities lead Blake Betser told the board the district has tentative budgets for several summer projects including an auditorium curtain and sound system (~$50,000), a secure elementary office entrance (~$45,000), blinds replacement (~$20,000) and a quoted elementary partition wall priced at roughly $185,000. Betser said the partition quote was more substantial than a vinyl curtain option and that administrators would seek additional bids and alternatives before presenting a final recommendation.
A committee member criticized the $185,000 figure and urged the board to prioritize roofing repairs instead. "$180,000 just seems ludicrous to me to spend that on that when we've got so many other things that we could spend that money on," the committee member said. Betser offered lower‑cost alternatives: a manual vinyl pole curtain for about $20,000 or motorized curtains in the $35,000–$45,000 range. He committed to returning to the board with more quotes and reliability information by the May meeting.
The board also heard a presentation from a vendor (Greg of Pro Ceiling) on installing 4x8 Polymax sound panels to reduce gym reverberation. The vendor estimated the system would cut certain reverberant energy by about 80% and proposed a two‑week install window, likely in early June; the vendor quoted a total project cost of approximately $137,400. Board members discussed scheduling around graduation and the need to protect gym floors during installation.
Betser noted an $18,500 increase on a pending admin building truss/roof upgrade that would come from the district's contingency (~$25,000) and reminded the board that certain lease/rental funds must be used before year‑end. No formal votes were taken during the work session; staff were directed to gather additional bids, parts‑availability information and timing estimates for the May meeting.
