Conservation Credit System: 95 transactions and growing credit pool, SET staff reports

Sagebrush Ecosystem Trust staff reported progress on the Conservation Credit System at the councils April 16 meeting: since inception the system has finalized 95 mitigation transactions, conserving nearly 60,000 acres under contracts of varying durations, and transferred about 19,400 credits. SET staff (Sarah Hail and Skyler Monahan) said the program has about 66,000 credits immediately available and anticipates roughly 11,000 additional credits from projects in the pipeline.
"To date we've had 95 mitigation transactions finalized using the CCS since its inception; this conserves nearly 60,000 acres for at least 30 years," SET staff said, citing the programs transaction log. They also noted that six credit projects entered the system this year, up from an average of two per year in earlier years.
On the debit side, SET reported around 18,900 unmitigated debits outstanding (not including TBDs). SET staff emphasized that while available credits presently outnumber unmitigated debits, pending debit projects could alter that balance and staff are tracking demand and transactions closely.
SET staff highlighted outreach and training: the program certified 58 verifiers in early 2026, hosted proponent workshops and federal partner briefings, and is expanding collaboration with BLM, Forest Service and the National Forest Foundation on public-lands restoration projects that could participate in mitigation or crediting partnerships.
