Facilities staff described the doors as having antiquated locking mullions for which replacement parts cannot be sourced, and said the lack of consistent door and glass configurations across nine (soon-to-be ten) district buildings complicates emergency lockdown procedures. "The doors are so antiquated that we can't find the parts any longer," a facilities presenter said, and noted a safety assessment by the intermediate unit flagged the issue.
In addition to door replacement, staff proposed districtwide, quick-deploy security window coverings (shades with Velcro strips for rapid deployment) to create a consistent lockdown response across classrooms and buildings; staff are collecting measurements and counts to firm quotes. The district also listed other capital needs under review — paving, tennis courts, stage curtains, boilers, roofing and flooring projects — and plans to complete most work over the summer when buildings are unoccupied.
Funding and procurement: Board members asked whether the door and security-shade purchases would come from the capital projects fund or the general fund. Mr. Lince said the door quote is an installed price and that certain replacement purchases (for vehicles and equipment) are being funded from the general fund as part of a replacement cycle, while capital funds are reserved for longer-life projects. Staff said they obtained a quote for the door replacement (not bid) and are seeking board approval of quotes so facilities can begin summer scheduling.
What’s next: staff expect to return with completed pricing for the majority of projects and requested board approval of quotes so vendors can be scheduled for summer work.
