The Veterans Advisory Council completed several procedural actions and heard community updates during its regular meeting.
Procedural actions: the board approved the March 19, 2026 minutes after quorum was established and voted to excuse absences for Ruben and Donald Brown for March. During subcommittee business, a member nominated themself and, following a motion and second, the board elected Joe as chair of the homeless subcommittee; the membership will revisit returning a previous lead to the homelessness subcommittee at the next meeting.
Community presentations: Erica Palasios of Accent Care described caregiver services available to veterans, including in-home assistance (meal preparation, bathing and dressing), help arranging transportation and assistance completing benefit applications. Palasios said caregivers typically require an honorable discharge for some services and noted Accent Care partners with local organizations (identified in the briefing) to connect veterans to respite and mental-health supports.
City/county update: City and county staff provided a schedule of upcoming veteran-focused events, including a resource fair and a veterans memorial ribbon-cutting the following day, a claims clinic and an honor-flight return; the honor-flight return was scheduled for April 25 at 4:00 p.m. and board members were encouraged to attend and welcome veterans at the airport.
What’s next: board members agreed to add re-assigning Don Brown to the homelessness subcommittee to the next meeting agenda and to request follow-up information on program changes (for example, questions about the VASP mortgage-assistance program) and staffing levels for specialty care in the VA.
