A DHHL representative said the department recently launched Ka Leo Opu Mama, a transitional housing effort for about 18 beneficiaries, and reported using a bit over $6 million in federal Nah Ho Sa funds for that project. The representative said DHHL currently does not have dedicated state funding for the program but would like to expand it through partnerships and coordination with other agencies.
Members asked whether the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) was partnering with DHHL on services; the DHHL representative said there is not currently a partnership for this specific purpose but DHHL would be open to collaboration. A member also asked whether the program would be limited to beneficiaries who meet DHHL’s 50% blood-quantum requirement; the representative confirmed the program targets DHHL beneficiaries meeting that eligibility standard.
The committee moved SCR 93 forward during decision-making.
