Finance committee approves Superfund site scope and additional soil borings for MBX property

The Wausau Finance Committee on April 14 approved a 2026 scope of work and budget with GHD Services for the Wausau Water Supply Superfund site and also approved a sole-source agreement with REI Environmental to complete the phase 2 investigation at the former MBX property located at 2011 North 1st Avenue (DNR BRRTS #02-37-598480).
Staff explained the GHD work follows annual EPA direction for required tasks and that costs will come from the environmental/pollution fund. For the MBX property, staff said the DNR requires borings under the building and cited a 30-day timeline for hiring environmental consultants; the committee approved the sole-source approach on the grounds of continuity of service and time constraints.
Committee members asked about funding sources and staff confirmed the environmental fund/TID cash as appropriate sources for the work. Both items passed on voice votes.
