Elementary principal says Trousdale County school singled out in national report for student growth

The elementary principal told the Trousdale County Board of Education that Trousdale County Elementary School will be featured next week in a national report by TNTP (The National Teacher Project), noting the school is among a small share of U.S. schools showing faster-than-typical academic growth for students who start behind.
"We have kids who are behind but they leave our school caught up," the principal said, adding that the district’s emphasis on instructional coherence — aligning curricula and expectations across grades — is central to that progress. "Keeping our kids at the center of everything that we do" has guided teachers and administrators, the principal said.
Board members and colleagues praised the principal’s leadership and long service. One board member said panels and district peers have sought the district’s practices as an example. The principal clarified that the TNTP study was an external analysis and said the district did not commission the study: "we did not pay them to do that study," the principal said.
School leaders also reported current enrollment numbers at the meeting: K–5 enrollment was given as 648, middle school 330 and high school 404, a net change of two students compared with the same day last year, the district said. Principals noted minor seasonal absences and said staff are preparing for upcoming benchmark assessments and parent-teacher conferences.
The district highlighted extracurriculars and community events alongside academics: band competitions and homecoming activities were listed on the calendar, and staff described classroom and tutoring supports used to sustain the school’s progress.
The board heard the recognition as a team achievement, with multiple speakers underscoring that the honor reflects teachers, staff and parental partnerships. The district said the national report is expected to be released next Wednesday and that Trousdale County Elementary will be named in that release.
