The Wausau Finance Committee approved two transit items April 14: a budget amendment to fund a Wausau Metro Ride feasibility study (mostly grant-funded) and a fixed-price maintenance/support agreement with GMV/Syncromatics for CAD/AVL, passenger counting and scheduling systems.
Transit staff and councilors described long-running work stretching back to 2022–23 and said the feasibility study vendor selection reduced projected costs compared with an earlier, failed effort. Staff warned that the grant supporting the study had been extended and could expire, which proponents argued made postponement risky. A motion to postpone the feasibility study was defeated and the study was approved.
On the CAD/AVL contract, councilors stressed safety benefits — real-time vehicle location would let police locate a bus if a driver triggers 911 and reduce uncertainty during alarm events — and rider convenience from near-real-time arrival information. The committee heard that the project is 100% grant-funded for roughly three years, with annual subscription fees (estimated $100,000–$132,000 range) that may begin after the grant period. The committee approved the CAD/AVL maintenance and support agreement.
