The Saratoga Springs City Council on Tuesday approved awarding the Saratoga Road and Pony Express widening contract to Geneva Rock for $10.9 million, well under the engineer's estimate of about $14.5 million.
Staff described the project scope as widening 2300 West (Saratoga Road) to five lanes from Pioneer Crossing to Pony Express and extending five lanes east to the city boundary with Lehi. Add‑alternates included a signal at 1100 West (Dry Creek Elementary Road) and upsizing a box culvert at Dry Creek to prepare for upstream capacity increases that neighboring Lehi is studying.
Jeremy, the project lead, told the council MAG (Mountainland Association of Governments) will fund about 93% of the project with the city matching roughly 7% of the cost; the contract value will be reimbursed to the city by MAG over the project schedule. He said the city will coordinate with UDOT and UTA projects and intends to minimize lane closures by staging work over two construction seasons so school impacts are limited.
Council members asked about sequencing and whether intersections could be advanced first to reduce traffic impacts; staff said they prefer completing the Pony Express/Saratoga intersection first and would return with a detailed phasing schedule negotiated with the contractor. The council voted unanimously to approve the contract award.
What to watch: staff said they will finalize easements and scheduling with the contractor and publish a public construction schedule in the coming weeks.
