Commission recommends $30,000 in non‑legacy aid to six local organizations

Commissioners spent extensive time reviewing non‑legacy aid applications and a shared spreadsheet that added prior city awards and project totals to their evaluation. Several members said they favored distributing smaller awards broadly to support emerging organizations, while others noted occasions where a larger award could complete a project.

The group discussed individual applicants and staff constraints. Commissioners raised concerns that a $5,000 award would not purchase a van for the Community Inclusion Club and recommended the group might need another year to organize before receiving funding. Commissioners also reviewed Homes 4 My Peeps and noted its replacement garden site is outside Iowa City limits; several members supported deferring that application to a future funding round until organizational details were clearer.

After comparing staff recommendations, prior funding histories and commissioners' rankings, the panel coalesced on a slate of six recipients to recommend to City Council: Agape Cafe, IC Compassion, Immigrant Welcome Network, Iowa City Sober Living, Open Heartland and Visiting Nurses Association, each recommended at $5,000. A motion to approve the slate passed by voice vote.

Commission Sung (commission member) summarized the outcome and the broader point that the limited pool cannot support all requests: "There's not a bad organization in need of funding in this list and probably this list is not inclusive of all the organizations in town that need funding." The commission noted the applications totaled roughly $190,500 while the pool available for recommendation was about $30,000, and asked staff to forward the approved slate to City Council for final action.
