Supporters of the gambrel pointed to historical precedents of gambrel barns in pastoral contexts, but multiple commissioners were concerned about the building’s width and squat proportions as proposed, and about its proximity to Squam Road. Commissioners favored the simpler gable option as a better fit with proportions and the street, and asked for commitments to mitigate visibility through vegetation.
The board approved a motion that included Exhibit A: replicate existing vegetation if disturbed during construction, replace any cleared roadside vegetation with equivalent or greater plantings, and screen the glazed connector so that it would not be visible at the time of final inspection. The motion carried with a majority in favor; one member opposed and one abstained.
What happens next: Staff will file the Exhibit A with the project's record; the applicant must implement the agreed vegetation and screening measures and staff will verify compliance at inspection.
