City staff say Point Bridge likely will be closed through summer during construction

City public works staff told the East Grand Forks City Council on Jan. 6 that the Point Bridge replacement project will likely require a full closure during construction and that staff aim to complete work before the next school year.
Mr. Emory, a city staff member providing the project update, said plans were submitted to the district state aid engineer and that initial comments have been returned. The city also received comments from the North Dakota Department of Transportation and the City of Grand Forks; once district review is complete the plans will go to St. Paul for further review and authorization to advertise for construction.
On timing, Mr. Emory told the council the intended construction window is to close the bridge once school is out and to aim to have work finished by the time school resumes, adding "we should plan on the Point Bridge being closed throughout the summer." Council members asked about whether a new bridge would be built before closing the existing span; staff indicated the schedule seeks to minimize disruption but a full closure is likely for at least the summer construction season.
Mr. Emory also said a bid opening for the bike-trail improvement project is scheduled for Thursday and that results will be brought to next week's work session for discussion.
What happens next: Public works will continue plan revisions with district and state reviewers and will report bid results and schedule information to the council at the upcoming work session.
